Prevention - Getting Proactive - “Practice Mind Chaos Prevention - It hurts less”

The verdict is out; no one wants Chaos in Brainland. When we get caught in the throes of anxiety, the calm, clear, rational brain is swamped by the symptoms of anxiety, such as an increased heartbeat, rapid breathing, cold sweat, feeling dizzy, and a blank mind that can’t think about anything but the present worry. Under these conditions, it is impossible to create Harmony in Brainland.

So, how does one return to harmony, the elusive positive mindset we all deserve?

If only there was a miracle cure, a pill to take or a button to press, to restore harmony forever. But no such luck; even William Shakespeare wrote, "Nothing comes from doing nothing”. To stop getting brain chaos, stress, worries and anxiety, we have to do something, and because "prevention is better than cure," we’ll begin with that.

Let's concentrate on thought processes, awareness and attitudes which are loosely comprised under the topic of "Mind Management”, the cognitive functioning of thinking, reasoning and forming attitudes.

As an aid for a happy Brainland, I will suggest "Mini-Mind-Workouts" and "Warm-Ups" after most chapters to ensure you will be ready when your mind needs you.

Replacement Concept

Replacement therapy is a concept that I have formulated because one cannot think about something one thinks about. This may sound like a riddle, but it's one of the curious things the mind does. The only way to not think about a thought is by replacing it with another thought, because by not thinking about a thought, you think about it. Try it – do not think about "Brain Chaos”.

There are two behaviours that shouldn't hijack your life, one is anxiety, and the other is what you do to avoid anxiety.

Anxiety is a set of mental anguish symptoms we want to replace with something much better; no one wants to be controlled by anxiety. But the exhausting act of trying to avoid anxiety is also a factor that can negatively impact your life. Have you stopped anything you want to do out of fear of getting into a stressful situation or anxiety? The fear of getting anxious can be worse than the anxiety itself. That type of chaos needs replacing, and replacing takes effort and time.

Most of the techniques I write about are replacement techniques, meaning they replace something unwanted with something wanted. Time is also of the essence. Rather than spending time worrying, spend time with something creative, constructive, valuable and supportive.

Curiously enough, it is always easier to worry than to think constructively. It takes no effort to worry; it comes automatically. However, it takes some serious "mental aerobics" to adjust our thinking in positive, productive ways.

Prevention and Mind Management

The mind is exceptionally versatile; in an instant, it can drop you into deep despair or lift you up to the highest altitudes of happiness, even ecstasy, and all without drugs and often involuntarily. You may not mind feeling happy, but no one likes feeling stressed or anxious.

We are working on a lifetime project. A guiding principle is to know ourselves and all the nooks and crannies of our minds. In this process (sometimes uncomfortable), we will face up to our unwanted thoughts, feelings and fears. The better we know ourselves, the better we will be able to create a constructive, happier mindset. No one else can do it for us. Tearing away the shackles of negative, destructive thinking is our responsibility alone.

The solution and concept is to control what you can control and to let go of what you can’t control. It can be done by strengthening your “Mental Muscles”, developing alternatives, and supportive thinking habits and attitudes; all a form of “mind management” or, as I sometimes call it, “Mind Aerobics”.

Fortunately, there are many valuable concepts and thinking habits, and some are surprisingly easy to use. Just to know what to control and what not, and that not all the problems in the world have to be solved by you, can make a difference. This realization leads to the first question, “Have you taken on too much?”

There is no need to take everything on board, no need to concentrate thoughts and feelings internally, therefore experiencing deep or disturbing emotions like worries, stress or anxiety. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with feeling happy. Stay that way, fly high and enjoy, but when you feel anxiety emerging, then switch your concentration to something you care for, therefore replacing the anxiety with something much better, something in your control.

How is that supposed to work? Your mind finds it challenging to be concentrating on two mental states at the same time. Feeling and visualizing are two different mental and sensory states. Some people may be good at “multi-tasking” but this is different; only one mode can be fully functioning at any one time, let it be a pleasant visualization mode. Therefore, when visualizing something positive, instead of negative mind movies, the feelings of anxiety will subside. A Mental First Aid Techniqueis to look up. If you look down, you will feel emotions; if you look up, you don’t, you will be in visualizing mode.

People with depression look depressed, because they are looking down, accessing their feelings. We feel and look more confident when we sit or stand tall and straight, looking up purposefully into the future.

People experiencing anxiety, look fearful and distraught, but by looking up, standing strong and confident, they can act themselves out of anxiety with brave and assured body language, while visualising a positive future.
